Madam Marie Curie was born on November 7, 1867. She was the first person and first woman to win two Nobel Prizes, in Physics, and later in Chemistry, her efforts with her husband Pierre resulted into the discovery of polonium and radium. She championed the development of X-rays. During World War I in 1914, she devoted her time and resources to the cause of war victims. She championed the use of portable X-ray machines in the field, and these medical vehicles earned the nickname “Little Curies.” She died on July 4, 1934, of aplastic anemia, believed to be caused by prolonged exposure to radiation.
